Skin Conditions
Acne
What is Acne?
Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point of their lives. Skin becomes oily and pores get clogged causing spots which if severe can be extremely painful.
It primarily affects areas of the skin with a relatively high number of oil glands including the face, upper part of the chest, upper arms and back.
If left untreated, inflammation can persist, causing damage to the underlying tissue leading to permanent scarring.
The effects and appearance of this can lead to anxiety, reduced self-esteem and in more advanced and severe cases it can lead to depression and thoughts of suicide.
There are 5 processes that lead to acne:
- Increased sebaceous secretions (caused by hormonal changes)
- Increased keratinization of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin
- Clogged pores
- Acne forming bacteria (P.acne)
- Inflammation
At Carrara Aesthetics we treat all 5 of these processes to stop and prevent new acne from forming. All treatments are topical thereby reducing internal side effects and we also understand the impact that it has on appearance so treating the scars and pigmentation is also our priority.
What is Acne Scarring?
Acne scarring is a common side effect of acne. There are different types of scarring and some are more severe than others. Acne scarring can often cause embarrassment and psychological distress. Treatments can improve your skin for a smoother, brighter, healthier looking complexion.
Prevention is better than cure! Early diagnosis and treatment is imperative to avoid worsening of acne as well as the psychological impacts that’s associated with scarring.
For optimum results a combination of treatments is advised.
Treatments:
Medical Microneedling – Boosts collagen, fibrin and elastin to improve the skins tone and texture. Scars improve over time.
Chemical peels – Increases skin renewal thus removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Peels improve the appearance of scarring and associated hyperpigmentation that may be caused. Clears out pores and reduces oil production thereby reducing inflammation.
Mesotherapy – To kill acne-forming bacteria, reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and aid in skin renewal.
Medical grade skin care products – to slow down excess oil production, reduce inflammation, kill acne-forming bacteria, restore barrier function and increase skin renewal for a holistic approach to acne.
Rosacea
Rosacea
Rosacea is a common but poorly understood chronic skin condition that mainly affects the face. It can sometimes be mistaken for acne, eczema or an allergic skin reaction.
Rosacea affects both men and women, usually those with fair skin and may be due to genetics or hormonal changes. Symptoms range from facial flushing, erythema (redness) to acne-like spots and visible blood vessels (telangiectasia). Triggers included heat, hot drinks, alcohol, stress, caffeine, certain foods and medications and strenuous exercise which may cause significant distress and embarrassment.
Left untreated, rosacea can progress and change the physical appearance of the skin which may have a significant psychological impact.
The cause of Rosacea is unknown and cannot be cured. However, with the right course of treatments and the correct home care products it can be managed to improve the appearance and the general health of the skin.
At Carrara Aesthetics we offer topical therapies as well as medical grade products. When combined with in-clinic treatments we can help prevent flare ups and decrease the severity of symptoms.
Treatments include:
Chemical peels – to restore barrier function.
Medical Microneedling – combined with professional serums can balance the skin and restore normal functioning.
These are non-invasive treatments and have minimal to no side effects.
Pigmentation
Pigmentation (Dark or light patches)
Melasma
Melasma is a common acquired skin condition, occurring mainly in woman, and is characterised by brown, greyish patches primarily found on the face. Onset is typically between the ages of 20 and 40 years.
Factors that may trigger melasma are:
- Hormones - pregnancy, the use of oral contraceptives, medications such as HRT, thyroid dysfunctionÂ
- Chronic sun exposure
- MedicationsÂ
- Family history
Melasma can have a significant impact on a patient’s self-esteem. That’s why at Carrara Aesthetics we do a full assessment of possible causes and combine treatment modalities to give you the best outcome.
Treatments include:
Chemical peels – improves texture, tone and cellular turnover which gradually starts to lighten and remove pigmentation.
Medical Microneedling – Combined with professional serums, start to lighten and restore the natural barrier function of the skin.
Cosmelan/Dermamelan – to lighten current pigmented areas and to prevent further melanin production.
Mesotherapy – inject special formulations into the skin to reduce dark patches
Medical Grade skincare products – to reduce inflammation, inhibit melanin production, restore normal functioning of cells within the skin and to minimise UV radiation.
Post inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)
PIH is the discoloration of the skin that follows after an uncontrolled inflammatory reaction has taken place. This is the skin’s natural response but the marks that are left behind can be distressing to most.Â
PIH can occur after any inflammatory reaction such as acne, laser treatments or homecare treatments where the skin has not been prepared well enough.Â
When these dark spots are combined with the aggravating condition such as acne and acne scarring, it can have a profound psychological impact on a person’s daily life.
Treatments include:
Medical Microneedling – Combined with individualised serums, start to lighten and restore the natural barrier function of the skin. Stimulates new cell regeneration.
Chemical peels – improves texture, tone and cellular turnover which gradually starts to lighten and remove pigmentation. Reduces inflammation to balance the skin.
Cosmelan/Dermamelan – to lighten current pigmented areas and to prevent further melanin production.

Medical Grade skincare products – reduces inflammation, inhibit melanin production, restore normal functioning of cells within the skin and to minimise UV radiation.
Sun Damage
Damage to our skin from UV rays begins from an early age. UV exposure can cause blemishes such as age-spots/sun spots. These can occur on areas that are most exposed to the sun, such as face, back, shoulders and back of hands.
Treatments include:
Chemical peels – improves texture, tone and cellular turnover which gradually starts to lighten and remove pigmentation.
Medical Microneedling – Combined with professional serums, start to lighten and restore the natural barrier function of the skin.
Stretch Marks
Stretch Marks
Stretch marks are a common problem in both men and women. Some skin types are more susceptible to stretch marks than others. Stretch marks can commonly occur on the arms, stomach, thighs, around the knee area or breast area. A combination of non-invasive treatments may reduce the appearance of these marks. Early diagnosis and treatment will ensure optimal results

Medical Chemical peel
Medical grade peels are used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck or body. Chemical peels work exfoliating the top layers of your skin revealing a smoother and more radiant complexion.
Chemical peels stimulate new cell growth and regeneration of tissue that is clearer, smoother and firmer.
Chemical peels have been used dating back to ancient Egypt. Egyptians, and in particular Cleopatra was famously known to bathe in sour milk (contains lactic acid) to improve the look and texture of the skin.
A single chemical peel can provide immediate effect of bright and radiant skin, however more significant concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles, acne, scarring and hyperpigmentation would need multiple treatments.
There are various chemical peel that range in strength and depth at which they penetrate. At your consultation, the type of peel, the strength and depth will be discussed depending on your concern and the area involved.

Medical Microneedling with SkinPen Precision
Coined ‘perfection by pinprick’ by leading UK skin experts. SkinPen Precision is a medical grade microneedling device that offers superior skin rejuvenation for patients with minimal downtime.
Microneedling is a broad term used for a variety of treatments. Also known as ‘collagen induction therapy’, microneedling is the process of creating controlled micro channels in your skin stimulating the body’s natural healing process to combat the signs of ageing, improve scarring and damaged skin and improves uneven skin tone. By increasing collagen and elastin, your skin is tighter and more rejuvenated. This treatment makes it more versatile in treating different skin and body conditions such as acne, acne scarring, lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, scars and stretch marks
Microneedling has traditionally been done with a derma roller, which causes more trauma to the skin than is necessary. The SkinPen is safe on all skin types and is effective on all body parts with little to no downtime.
At Carrara Aesthetics safety comes first that is why we perform microneedling with the SkinPen Precision device, which is the first FDA cleared medical device in the world.
For optimum results a course of treatments is advised. Microneedling may be combined with other treatments for optimum results.

Cosmelan/Dermamelan – Depigmentation
Hyperpigmentation results from excess melanin production and appears as darkened patches or spots on the skin. This can result from various conditions such as acne, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma from hormonal imbalances or medications or chronic sun exposure.
Both treatments have powerful active ingredients which are specially formulated to remove pigment from the skin.
At your Consultation, the whole procedure is explained as well as pre and post care protocols to follow. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have regarding treatment.
Medical Grade Skincare
Our skin is the largest organ in the body with the primary function of protection. Skin health and condition depend on its BALANCE. As we age we lose essential skin cells which compromise the barrier function which in turn causes lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity, sunspots, and hyperpigmentation.
To combat these signs of aging it’s essential to use products that have active ingredients at concentrated levels that are able to penetrate the skin and cause a change to its biological function.
At Carrara Aesthetics we have chosen the best medical grade products based on clinical evidence with years of scientific research to combat all signs of aging as well as to treat concerns such as acne, rosacea, and hyperpigmentation.

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive sweating)
While sweating is a normal and natural process it can sometimes be uncomfortable and interfere with daily life, causing social anxiety.
Hyperhidrosis is a common condition that can affect the whole body or certain areas. Treatment with botulinum toxin in the area blocks the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands.
This treatment can be administered for a range of concerns, whether you’re a gym goer, athlete, office worker who wants to avoid the underarm sweat marks or you preparing for your big day.
Come in for a confidential, no obligation consultation.
Hand Rejuvenation
While we concentrate on our face we forget that our hands are also exposed to the aging process. The skins on our hands are constantly exposed to harsh chemical, water, and the sun.
By treating the hands we can smoothen wrinkles, reduce the appearance of sunspots and hyperpigmentation to give the skin for a more youthful appearance. We offer various non-surgical and non-invasive treatments for this area depending on your concerns.
Treatments:
Medical Microneedling – Boosts collagen, fibrin and elastin to improve the skins tone and texture
Chemical peels – Increases skin renewal to give a brighter, more rejuvenated appearance while reducing sun spots and hyperpigmentation.
Neck and Décolletage Rejuvenation
The neck and Décolleté area are prone to the ageing process. This can drag the face down. Several non-invasive treatments can improve skin elasticity, tone and induce collagen production. This area can look smoother and gives the appearance of a lift to the lower face.
Treatments may be combined for optimum results
Chemical peels – Increases skin renewal to give a brighter, more rejuvenated appearance while reducing sun spots and hyperpigmentation.
Medical Microneedling – Boosts collagen, fibrin and elastin to improve the skins tone and texture and reduce lines and wrinkles to give a smoother younger appearance. Tightens and firms the skin.
Scar Treatment
Although scars are a natural part of the healing process it can have an emotional effect and impact on our daily life. Often a combination of treatments are necessary to improve the appearance of scars. Early diagnosis and treatment is imperative for optimal results.
Treatments:
Medical Microneedling – Boosts collagen, fibrin and elastin to improve the skins tone and texture. Scars improve over time
Chemical peels – Increases skin renewal to reduce scarring and associated hyperpigmentation that may be caused.
Cesarean Section Scars
C-sections can cause scarring. In some women, these scars become thick, raised, and red. That may mean that your scar is hypertrophic, where your body created more scar tissue than necessary. Scars may not only have a physical impact but also a mental one.
Various treatments can help soften old scars and get rid of raised scars. Several monthly treatments can help many people minimize the appearance of old C-section scars.‌
Gynaecoaesthetics (Intimate area discolouration)
The genito-perineal area, perianal area, pubic, inner side of thighs and groin area are all common areas that are prone to hyperpigmentation especially in darker skin types. Targeting skin discoloration on the intimate parts of the body, intimate peels can significantly improve pigmentation, as well as rejuvenate and brighten the skin on the delicate genital and anal regions. Whether the changes to the skin on these areas have occurred due to hormonal factors, ageing or for any other reason, an intimate peel can be the perfect solution.
Suitable for both men and women, this treatment helps to improve hyper-pigmentation around the vaginal and anal areas. Each treatment takes approximately 30 minutes to perform and doesn’t require any post-treatment downtime. The products that are applied are packed with proven active ingredients that will lighten the skin. Usually, a course of four treatments would be recommended, spaced between one and two weeks apart, along with homecare products.
All treatments are tailored to the individual and personal experiences and will be discussed at your Consultation.

Injectable Treatments (UK Only)
Anti-Wrinkle Injections
Wrinkles and facial lines are a natural part of ageing. They are formed when the skin loses its elasticity and firmness. These lines, although naturally occurring can be associated with negative emotions and have a psychological effect.
Botulinum toxin A is used to treat a number of conditions within the body. It works by partially blocking nerve impulses which stimulate the associated muscle thus causing temporary muscle relaxation.
Its use in aesthetic medicine is to help smooth your skin by injecting the muscle underlying the skin. As the muscle relaxes, the overlying skin softens thereby reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
These treatments are commonly performed in the upper face and areas around the lips, the chin and neck to combat the signs of ageing. When used correctly a smoother appearance can be achieved with the ‘frozen’ look.Â
The effects of injections are visible within 5-14 days after treatment and can last up to 3-9 months
